Those that try to motivate with fear and scare tactics are rarely successful. A good manager can motivate through example and by earning the respect of his or her employees.

Being aware of the needs and feelings of one's team is an important skill of a manager. In order to provide a comfortable and safe work environment a manager must be responsible. When employees feel safe and secure they are more likely to be happy and more productive.

Another important part of being a good manager is to not only get their work done on time but to manage their team to reach their deadlines as well. Not reaching a deadline can cause stress for the employees. When a manager fails to manage time well they may need to push their employees as the deadline approaches making them work harder and longer hours.
